Menstruation (Haidh)
Q
What is the minimum and maximum duration of menstruation?
Important Ruling
The scholars differ on fixed minimum/maximum, but in practice: the minimum is 1 day (24 hours) and the maximum is 15 days according to the Hanafi school. In the Shafi'i school, minimum is a moment, maximum is 15 days. In the Hanbali school, minimum is 1 day, maximum is 15 days. Most commonly, periods last 6–7 days.
If bleeding continues beyond 15 days, it is considered istihada (irregular bleeding / disease) and NOT haidh. A woman in istihada must perform ghusl, pray normally and fast. She should seek medical advice. The Prophet ﷺ gave specific guidance to Fatimah bint Abi Hubaish (RA) regarding istihada.
Hadees Proof
"Leave the prayer during your days of menstruation."
Sahih Bukhari 325 — The Prophet ﷺ to a woman asking about irregular bleeding
Q
Can a woman pray Salah during her period?
Not Allowed
A woman is prohibited from performing Salah during her period. This is agreed upon by all four schools of Islamic law (ijma).
Importantly — she does NOT need to make up the missed prayers after her period ends. This is a mercy from Allah. Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about this and confirmed: women are not required to make up prayers missed during menstruation.
Hadees Proof
"Is it not the case that when she menstruates, she does not pray or fast?"
Sahih Bukhari 304 — The Prophet ﷺ confirming this ruling
NoteA woman in her period can still make dua, do dhikr (SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar), listen to the Quran, and engage in Islamic learning. These acts of worship are not restricted.
Q
Can a woman recite Quran during her period?
Scholars Differ
This is a point of scholarly difference (ikhtilaf). The majority (Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali) say reciting Quran from memory is not allowed during haidh. The Maliki school and many contemporary scholars permit reciting Quran during menstruation.
Ibn Taymiyyah (rh) held that there is no authentic hadees that explicitly forbids women from reciting Quran during menstruation. He permitted it. Sheikh Ibn Baz, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen and many modern scholars also permit recitation from memory. All scholars agree that touching the physical Mushaf is not permitted during haidh without a barrier (like a cover or cloth).
Scholarly Position
"There is no authentic text that prohibits a menstruating woman from reciting the Quran."
Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmu al-Fatawa
Q
What must a woman do when her period ends?
Obligatory
She must perform a full ghusl (ritual bath) before she can resume prayer, fasting, touching the Quran or marital relations.
The ghusl involves: making the intention (niyyah), saying Bismillah, washing the entire body including washing the hair roots, and ensuring water reaches every part of the body. After completing ghusl, she resumes all acts of worship normally. If the period ends at night before Fajr, she must complete ghusl and may fast the next day — even if she could not complete ghusl until after Fajr time began, she should still fast that day.
Quran Proof
"Do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them."

Prayer (Salah) Issues
Q
Does a woman pray differently from a man?
Ruling
The basic method of Salah is the same for men and women in all four schools of law. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Pray as you have seen me pray" — this applies to both men and women.
The Hanafi school mentions some differences in posture for women for reasons of modesty (e.g. keeping the feet together, less space between limbs). However, many contemporary scholars including Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen state that there is no authentic specific hadees that proves women's prayer differs fundamentally from men's. Women are encouraged to pray in a way that is modest and comfortable. Women can lead other women in prayer — this is agreed upon by the majority of scholars.
Hadees Proof
"Pray as you have seen me pray."
Sahih Bukhari 631 — This command is for all Muslims, men and women
Q
Where is the best place for a woman to pray?
Recommended
The Prophet ﷺ said the best prayer for a woman is in her home — in the innermost part. This is a preference for spiritual closeness and modesty, not a prohibition from praying in the masjid.
Women have the right to pray in the masjid — the Prophet ﷺ explicitly said "Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from going to the masjid." Both statements are authentic. Praying at home earns more reward for women, but attending the masjid is permissible and was practised by the women of the Companions (RA).
Hadees Proof
"Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from the mosques of Allah."
Sahih Muslim 442 — The Prophet ﷺ
Q
Does a woman have to cover her hair in prayer?
Obligatory
Yes — covering the entire body including the hair is obligatory for a woman during salah. Prayer without proper covering is invalid according to the majority of scholars.
A woman must cover her entire body except the face and hands during prayer. If any part of the body that must be covered is exposed during prayer — even unintentionally — the prayer is invalidated if she was aware of it. If she forgot or did not know, most scholars say the prayer is still valid.
Hadees Proof
"Allah does not accept the prayer of a woman who has reached puberty unless she wears a head covering."

Fasting — Ramadan & Beyond
Q
Can a woman fast during her period?
Not Allowed
Fasting during menstruation is haram (forbidden) — unanimously agreed upon by all scholars. Even if a woman wants to fast, it is not valid and she must break her fast if her period begins.
These missed Ramadan fasts must be made up (qadha) after Ramadan ends — before the next Ramadan. She has the entire year to make up missed fasts. She does not pay any kaffarah (expiation) for these missed days — making them up is sufficient. This is a mercy from Allah, not a punishment.
Hadees Proof
"Is it not the case that when she menstruates she does not pray or fast? That is the deficiency in her religion." (This 'deficiency' is a mercy from Allah — she is excused, not punished.)
Sahih Bukhari 304
Q
How does a woman make up missed Ramadan fasts?
Obligatory
She must fast one day for every day she missed, before the following Ramadan. It is permissible to fast them separately or consecutively.
Aisha (RA) said: "We would miss fasts during the time of the Prophet ﷺ and we would not be able to make them up except in Sha'ban" — meaning she would sometimes delay until Sha'ban (the month before Ramadan). This shows it is permissible to delay within the year, but not beyond. If a woman delays making up fasts past the following Ramadan without a valid excuse, she must fast the missed days AND give fidya (feeding one poor person per day). If she had a valid excuse (illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding), she only needs to fast — no fidya.
Hadees Proof
"I would have fasts to make up from Ramadan and I was not able to do so except in Sha'ban."
Sahih Bukhari 1950 — Aisha (RA)
Q
Can a pregnant woman fast during Ramadan?
Allowed with conditions
If fasting poses no harm to the mother or the baby, she may fast. If there is genuine fear of harm to herself or the baby, she is permitted — and may even be obligated — to break her fast.
The concession for pregnant and breastfeeding women is based on the general Islamic principle: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286). Scholars differ on what is required when she breaks her fast — some say she only needs to make up the days (qadha), others say she also needs to pay fidya. The majority position (Shafi'i, Hanbali) is that she pays fidya as well if she feared for her baby but not herself. She should consult a doctor and a reliable scholar.
Quran Proof
"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286
Q
Can a breastfeeding woman skip Ramadan fasts?
Allowed if needed
Yes. A breastfeeding woman is permitted to skip fasting if she genuinely fears harm to herself or her baby from lack of nutrition or dehydration during fasting.
She is given the same concession as a pregnant woman. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has removed from the traveller half of the prayer and the fast, and from the pregnant and breastfeeding woman the fast." (Ahmad, Abu Dawud — Hasan hadees). She must make up the missed fasts. The requirement for fidya in addition to qadha is disputed — consult a scholar. She should not feel guilty for taking this concession — it is halal and a mercy from Allah.
Hadees Proof
"Indeed Allah has removed from the traveller half the prayer and fasting, and from the pregnant and breastfeeding woman — fasting."

Pregnancy Issues
Q
Does a pregnant woman's bleeding during pregnancy count as menstruation?
Important Ruling
According to the majority of scholars (Shafi'i, Hanbali, Maliki), bleeding during pregnancy is NOT haidh (menstruation). It is treated as istihada (irregular/abnormal bleeding). The Hanafi school holds it may be menstruation.
This is important because: if it is NOT haidh, the woman must continue to pray and fast normally. If she follows the Hanafi position (that it may be haidh), she stops prayer and fasting during bleeding. A woman should follow the ruling of a qualified scholar she trusts. The safer position for peace of mind may be to follow the majority — continue praying and fasting during pregnancy bleeding.
Scholarly Reference
"The majority of scholars hold that the blood of a pregnant woman is not menstruation (haidh), therefore she does not stop praying or fasting on account of it."
Al-Nawawi, Al-Majmu; Ibn Qudama, Al-Mughni
Q
What are the rules after childbirth (Nifas)?
Must Know
Nifas (post-childbirth bleeding) has no minimum duration. The maximum is 40 days according to the Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, and 60 days in the Maliki school.
During nifas: prayer, fasting, marital relations, entering the masjid and performing tawaf are all suspended — exactly the same rules as haidh. If bleeding stops before 40 days, she performs ghusl and resumes all worship immediately. If bleeding continues past 40 days, it is treated as istihada and she must resume prayer and fasting. She must make up all fasts missed during nifas. She does not make up prayers.
Hadees Proof

Breastfeeding Issues
Q
For how long is breastfeeding recommended in Islam?
Recommended
Allah mentions two full years as the complete duration of breastfeeding. This is the recommended maximum. It is not compulsory — a mother may wean earlier by mutual agreement.
Quran Proof
"Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years — for whoever wishes to complete the nursing."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:233
Q
If a breastfeeding mother skips Ramadan fasts, how does she make them up?
Obligation
She must fast one day for every day she missed. She can make these up any time during the year — consecutively or separately. She should complete them before the next Ramadan if possible.
If breastfeeding continues for two years and she misses fasts across two Ramadans, she accumulates all missed fasts and makes them up as her situation allows. There is no penalty for genuine inability to make up fasts quickly, as long as she has the intention and makes them up as soon as she is able. If she is still breastfeeding when the next Ramadan arrives, scholars permit her to continue the concession and continue accumulating qadha fasts.
Quran Principle
"Whoever among you is ill or on a journey — then a number of other days."
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:184 — The general principle of making up missed fasts
Q
Is a husband required to financially support breastfeeding?
Husband's Obligation
Yes — if a mother breastfeeds her child, the father is required by Quran to provide her with food, clothing and compensation for breastfeeding. This is a financial right of the mother.
Quran Proof
"Upon the father is the mother's provision and her clothing according to what is acceptable."

Q
How does a woman perform ghusl after menstruation?
Step by Step
Ghusl becomes obligatory when menstruation ends. The ghusl is valid as long as water reaches every part of the body.
Steps of ghusl:
1. Make the intention (niyyah) in your heart
2. Say Bismillah
3. Wash both hands three times
4. Wash private parts
5. Perform full wudu
6. Pour water over the head three times, massaging to reach the roots
7. Pour water over the right side of the body, then the left
8. Ensure every part — including under arms, behind ears, navel, hair roots — is reached by water

It is sunnah to use a piece of cotton or cloth scented with musk to clean the traces of blood (as the Prophet ﷺ advised Asma bint Shakal RA).
Hadees Proof
"Take a piece of cotton with musk and purify yourself with it."
Sahih Muslim 332 — The Prophet ﷺ to Asma bint Shakal (RA) on ghusl after menstruation
Q
Does a woman need to undo her hair braids for ghusl?
No — not required
A woman does not need to undo her hair braids for ghusl after menstruation — as long as she ensures the water reaches the roots of her hair thoroughly.
Umm Salamah (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ whether she needed to undo her braids for ghusl after menstruation and after intercourse. He said she only needed to ensure water reached the roots. For ghusl after intercourse (janabah), she does not need to undo braids. This is a specific mercy — undoing long plaited hair every time would be very difficult.
Hadees Proof
"No — it is sufficient for you to pour three handfuls of water over your head, then pour water over yourself, and you will be purified."
Sahih Muslim 330 — The Prophet ﷺ to Umm Salamah (RA)
Q
Can a woman in a state of janabah (ritual impurity) delay ghusl?
Permissible to delay — briefly
It is permissible to delay ghusl for a short while — for example until morning. However, she should perform ghusl before Fajr prayer if possible, as sleeping in a state of janabah is disliked.
The Prophet ﷺ was asked whether a person could sleep in a state of janabah. He said yes — after performing wudu. Making wudu before sleeping in a state of janabah is sunnah. This applies equally to women. The key obligation is to perform ghusl before the time of prayer that requires it.
Hadees Proof
"Yes — let him perform wudu and then sleep, and let him take the ritual bath whenever he wishes."
Sahih Bukhari 287
